Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation or UVGI is a disinfection tool that uses UV-C or short-wave light to inactivate microorganisms. UV-C destroys the nucleic acid in the microorganism and disrupts its DNA leaving it unable to perform any essential cellular functions, rendering them practically inert.
In today’s health care facilities disinfection with chemical disinfectants alone is inadequate. Chemicals do a great job of killing bacteria and viruses, but they depend on the people who apply them and the contact surfaces to which they are applied. UVGI disinfection are a secondary process to ensure that no areas are missed during the cleaning operation. High-touch areas such as electronic equipment in hospitals or laboratories are difficult to spray with bleach. UVGI energy contacts all exposed surfaces, including places that are hard to get.
